Creating a Wikipedia Article

Are you considering creating a Wikipedia article for your company? Here are the six essential steps.

A well-written Wikipedia article gives readers a neutral, independently sourced view of your company – but Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a marketing platform, and no company is automatically entitled to an article. English Wikipedia has its own standards for corporate notability, sourcing, conflicts of interest and paid contributions – different from the German-language Wikipedia and other editions. An article elsewhere does not automatically qualify you for one in English.

This guide focuses on companies, but the same principles apply if you're seeking an article as anindividual – entrepreneur, executive, scientist, athlete, author or musician. Our Notability Check covers these cases too, and our team is happy to advise. Augusta Atlantic guides you through every step with a transparent, policy-aligned process – turning acomplex set of rules into a clear, manageable path to your article.

The first steps when you want to create a Wikipedia entry

1. Check whether your company is notable

Before drafting an article,check whether your company is likely to meet English Wikipedia’s notability requirements for organizations and companies.

A company is generally presumed notable when it has received significant coverage in multiple reliable, independent secondary sources – each discussing the company directly and indepth, not merely naming it in passing. Strong sources include:

  • substantial reporting in established newspapers or magazines;
  • in-depth company profiles by editorially independent publications;
  • books or academic publications that discuss the companyin detail; and
  • high-quality industry coverage with clear editorialindependence.

Press releases, company websites, sponsored content, directories and brief mentions generally don’t count – nor do revenue, headcount, age, awards or market position on their own. Quality beats quantity: several minor mentions can’t be combined into significant coverage. Our free Notability Check gives you a fast, expert read on your source material before you invest any further in the process.

2. Create an account and disclose your conflict of interest

Create a dedicated Wikipedia account for the project. If you’re an employee, representative or adviser ofthe company, you have a conflict of interest – a relationship that must behandled transparently, not an accusation of misconduct.

English Wikipedia’s conflict-of-interest guideline strongly discourages direct editing on behalf ofan employer or client, and the paid-contribution disclosure policy requires paid contributors to disclose their employer, client and affiliations.

In short: a company’s involvement – and any paid assistance – must never be concealed.

Augusta Atlantic guides you through the entire account and disclosure process, so you always stay transparent and compliant without having to become a Wikipedia policy expert yourself.

3. Create a draft – not a live article

Company representatives should never publish a new corporate article directly into Wikipedia’s live article space. The right route is a draft submitted through Articles for Creation(AfC).

Wikipedia’s Article Wizard helps you start a draft; AfC then provides an independent review before it can golive. The title should reflect the company’s most common name in reliable sources – not be chosen for branding or SEO.

Working in draft space lets content, sourcing and disclosures be reviewed before submission, though it doesn’t reserve the title or guarantee eventual publication.

The remaining steps for creating a Wikipedia entry

4. Research and assess reliable sources

Source research is the foundation of a credible article. It’s important to distinguish sources that establish notability from sources that merely verify individual facts. To establish notability, asource should generally be:

  • significant: it discusses the company directly and inmeaningful depth;
  • independent: neither author nor content is controlledby or connected to the company;
  • reliable: it has a track record for fact-checking andeditorial oversight; and
  • secondary: it offers independent analysis rather thanreproducing first-hand claims.

Wikipedia’s reliable-sources guideline applies throughout. Company-controlled sources may verify simple facts but can’t establish notability, and internal knowledge, unpublished documents or unsupported claims never belong in an encyclopedic draft – it must reflect what published sources actually say.

5. Write a neutral, encyclopedic draft

A Wikipedia article is not acompany profile or brand story. It must follow Wikipedia’s neutral point ofview, representing significant published viewpoints fairly and in proportion tothe evidence – no promotional language, mission statements or award lists withoutgenuine encyclopedic significance.

Structure follows the emphasis found in independent sources: typically history, business activities, major developments, public impact and, where documented, controversies. Negative information isn’t excluded just because it’s unwelcome, but it must be presented accurately and proportionately – the goal is a fair summary of the published record, not a flattering one.

6. Submit the draft through Articles for Creation

Once the draft is checked for notability, sourcing, neutrality and transparency, you submit it to Articlesfor Creation through your own disclosed account – Augusta Atlantic guides every step, but you perform the submission yourself.

An independent reviewer may accept the draft, decline it with feedback, request revisions, or reject an unsuitable topic. Review times vary and rest entirely with Wikipedia’s volunteers – no one can guarantee acceptance or a review timeline.

Where feedback calls for it, we prepare revised drafts together – incorporating additional sources or adjustments to tone and structure – with as many revision rounds as it takes, included at no extra cost. Even after acceptance, an article stays open to community editing; no company owns or controls its Wikipedia article.

Why have a Wikipedia entry created professionally?

Creating a Wikipedia page iseasy to get wrong. A notability assessment, careful source evaluation, encyclopedic structure, neutral language and transparent disclosure all have to come together miss just one, and the result is a declined draft, wasted time, and a public record of the rejection.

Corporate submissions face especially close scrutiny: Wikipedia is a constant target for undisclosed marketing, so even a genuinely notable company can be turned away over weak sourcing or a promotional tone.

This is exactly where Augusta Atlantic’s expertise pays off. Our team works with Wikipedia’s notability, sourcing and neutrality standards every day. We research your subject, build the evidence base, write the encyclopedic draft, and guide you through disclosure and submission – so you don’t have to become a Wikipedia policy expert to get this right.

We can’t promise acceptance – no honest provider can, since that decision always rests with Wikipedia’s independent volunteers – but we can promise a process built to give your article its strongest, most policy-aligned chance of success.

Wikipedia for organizations and companies

Wikipedia is a valuable resource for companies and organizations. With its enormous reach and authority, it helps them increase visibility and strengthen brand awareness. Companies can use their Wikipedia page to present accurate, up-to-date information about their products, services, and history. In addition, Wikipedia provides a platform for transparency and openness, which can help build trust and credibility with customers and stakeholders.

Wikipedia for public figures

Wikipedia articles are especially important for public figures, as they serve as a reliable and comprehensive source of information. Well-written Wikipedia entries provide a clear and thorough overview of a person’s life and achievements. For many people, Wikipedia is the first place they turn to when searching for information on a specific topic or public figure. As Augusta Atlantic, we support public figures in obtaining a professionally created Wikipedia article.

Additional services offered by Augusta Atlantic:

As a professional Wikipedia agency, we not only assist companies looking to have a new Wikipedia entry created. We also help if you want to update your existing article or need an entry written in another language.

Updating a Wikipedia entry

Some Wikipedia entries are severely outdated or simply inaccurate. Older articles may have been written by an inexperienced member of a marketing team. Even if the article was considered acceptable at the time, it may no longer meet today’s Wikipedia quality standards. In all these cases, it makes sense to have the entry professionally revised. We begin by reviewing the existing article, then update and expand it with current, verified information — ensuring you receive a polished, up-to-date entry that complies fully with Wikipedia’s guidelines.

Creating a Wikipedia entry in another language

For international companies, a German-language article is often not enough. If you need an English article to improve global visibility, we can create that Wikipedia entry for you as well. One important note: the criteria for the English Wikipedia differ from those of the German version. We are highly experienced with the English-language Wikipedia and are happy to support you with content creation. The English Wikipedia does not use Germany’s relevance guidelines — instead, it follows notability requirements. This means your company or organization must have substantial, high-quality, independent media coverage to qualify for inclusion. Feel free to contact us if you need Wikipedia content created in other languages as well!

Why can’t I compare my article to other Wikipedia entries?

To be accepted on Wikipedia, an article must meet certain requirements. These include both formal and content-related guidelines. They are established by the Wikipedia community and are the result of years of collaboration among experienced Wikipedia editors — and we adhere to them strictly.

Reasons why you should never compare yourself to other articles:

Different availability of sources:
Another topic may have had more sources available, allowing more information to be included in the article during content creation.

Older article:
As interest in obtaining a Wikipedia entry has increased, the community has become more strict when reviewing new articles. What was approved five years ago may no longer meet today’s standards.

Question of notability:
If a competitor has a Wikipedia page, it may seem logical that you should get one as well. However, this often comes down to notability, and there may be a key difference that only experienced Wikipedia specialists can identify.
